Thorpe Theme Park: Britain's foremost thrill seeker's park

Added: 05/18/2006

Thorpe Theme Park located not far from London is a famous amusement park in Chertsey, Surrey, England. In 1998, the Tussaud's Group bought Thorpe Park, and it has changed a lot since the new century. The Tussaud's Group realized they needed to make Thorpe Park Britain's foremost thrill seeker's park. This meant the loss of its family atmosphere, and the park is now scarcely recognizable. Since 1999, a thrill ride has been built every year, and the park now contains the world's only 10 looping coaster and Europe's fastest roller coaster. The park also boasts Europe's best collection of flat rides and that of water rides. Thorpe Park is also one of the region's leading Business Parks. Thorpe Theme Park has now reached the stage of being the leading thrill seeker's park for Great Britain.

Thorpe Theme Park, not far from London,  is a famous amusement park located in Chertsey, Surrey, England.  Before the Tussaud's Group, one of Europe's largest developers of visitor attractions, took the park over, it was a kids' water park.  When the park opened all that was there was Mountbatten Pavilion (now called the Dome) and a few other attractions.  Its main attractions were a log flume, a small artificial beach and a few poor roller coasters.  Hereafter, every year more rides were implemented including Waterbus tours, a nature trail, Magic Mill and a 3D cinema.  All of these succeeded, but none were thrill-seeking and, thus, did not result in bringing people who traveled from all over the UK to visit the park.

In the 1980s it was decided that Thorpe Theme Park had to change to keep up with the leisure industry.  Over the years Thorpe Park installed more thrilling rides, and as they did more visitors came.   In 1998, the Tussaud's Group bought Thorpe Park - and the place changed a great deal since the new century.  Tussaud's famous for Chessington World of Adventures had these two parks in close proximity.  So, the Tussaud's Group realized they needed to market Chessington and Thorpe Park differently  and make Thorpe Park Britain's foremost thrill seeker's park with Chessington World of Adventures becoming a family-oriented park.  Admittedly, this meant the loss of its family atmosphere, which only remained in Thorpe Farm, and the park is now scarcely recognizable.

Since 1999, a thrill ride (and often more) has been built every year, and the park now contains the world's only 10 looping coaster and Europe's fastest roller coaster - an Intamin accelerator reaching 61 meters.  The park also boasts Europe's best collection of flat rides and a very strong collection of water rides left over from the park's pre-Tussaud's days.  The park operates from March to November.  Thorpe Park Adult (age 12 and over) Entry costs about £30; Thorpe Park Child (age 11 and under) Entry costs about £20.  Once you enter the park, you are free to attend all the rides you want.

Thorpe Park is also one of the region's leading Business Parks.  The site provides an outstanding working environment for companies of all scales.    The Business Park is being developed and managed by Thorpe Theme Park.  Thorpe Park is already a home to a number of companies including IBM, National Grid, Northern Foods, Regus, WS Atkins and Taylor Woodrow.  Caravan Park Thorpe located next to Thorpe Park enables tourists to enjoy the seafront and a sandy beach.  Lots of restaurants, pubs and shops are to be found nearby.  The caravan is equipped with everything you are likely to need.  Local activities such as golfing, skating, swimming, fishing and  horse riding are easily arranged.

Thorpe does have some good rides for little children, and so Thorpe is great for a family day out.  At the same time, Thorpe Park really is the best place to go for the wildest rides.  If you are not 1.4 meters tall you won't get on a lot of these rides.   Thorpe Theme Park has now reached the stage of being the leading thrill seeker's park for Great Britain.
